Flat-pack kitchens cost less upfront. Custom kitchens fit better, last longer and make the most of awkward spaces. For many Sydney homes, the best value is a mix of both. Here is how they compare.

The difference in short
| Flat-pack | Custom | |
|---|---|---|
| Sizes | Fixed module widths, gaps filled with panels | Built to the millimetre for your space |
| Materials | Standard board, limited finishes | Choice of board, veneers, timber, finishes and hardware |
| Fit in older homes | Struggles with out-of-square walls and uneven floors | Made to suit the room as it actually is |
| Lead time | Days to a few weeks | Usually 6–12 weeks to manufacture |
| Lifespan | Typically 10–15 years with care | 20+ years with quality board and hardware |
| Cost | Lowest upfront | Higher upfront, better value over time |
When flat-pack makes sense
- Rental properties or homes you’ll sell soon
- Simple, square rooms with standard ceiling heights
- Laundries, garages and secondary storage
- Tight budgets where the layout stays the same
Buy quality: moisture-resistant board, soft-close hinges and drawer runners with a good warranty make a big difference.
When custom is worth it
- Older Sydney homes and heritage properties where walls, floors and ceilings aren’t square
- Kitchens with islands, butler’s pantries or ceiling-height cabinetry
- Integrated appliances that need exact openings
- Open-plan kitchens where joinery must match the living area
- Homes you plan to stay in for many years
The best of both: a mixed kitchen
Many of our kitchens combine standard carcasses for straightforward base and wall cabinets with custom pieces where they matter: the island, tall pantry, corner solutions and feature panels. Custom doors and benchtops then give the whole kitchen a consistent, built-in finish. This costs less than a fully custom kitchen without looking like flat-pack.
What drives the cost difference
Custom cabinetry for a typical Sydney kitchen runs about $14,000–$40,000. Flat-pack cabinetry for the same space can be under half that, but installation, benchtops, plumbing and appliances cost much the same either way. That’s why the overall project difference is often smaller than the cabinet price suggests. See our kitchen renovation cost guide for full price ranges.

Frequently asked questions
Is a custom kitchen worth the extra cost?
In older homes, open-plan spaces and homes you’ll keep long term, usually yes: it fits better, uses space fully and lasts longer.
Can I mix flat-pack and custom cabinetry?
Yes. Standard carcasses with custom doors, an island and pantry are a common way to get a custom look for less.
How long do flat-pack kitchens last?
Typically 10–15 years with good care. Moisture-resistant board and quality hardware extend that.
How long does a custom kitchen take to make?
Usually 6–12 weeks to manufacture after the design is signed off, then 2–4 weeks on site.
